Frank Fico
Morning Was wondering if bottling and carbonating my brews can be done in growlers and if so can anyone suggest type so there is no breakage while carbonating
Steve Gyldenvand
I have bottled in growlers and howlers without any short-term problems, Frank. If you want to cellar some for longer-term maturing, the problem of lost carbonation arises from screw-on caps. You can check them and hand-tighten periodically, but I just don't think they will retain carbonation as well as crown-capped bottles. I do own a couple swing-top growlers with rubber gaskets, but I've never used them for home-brew conditioning. They live in the car and the truck, to be used when we stumble across a particularly tasty offering at one of the taprooms we somehow keep finding ourselves visiting. Slainte!
